‘It was like experiencing a fold in time, she said’ (2017)
SiO2.nH2O is located inside a round hut encased by a wooden slope painted in an artificial orange colour to resemble a red desert. The opal acts as a time machine producing a lightshow that makes deep time visible here in the present. It portrays the potential of life, encapsulated dormant inside, ready to awaken in the future. And then we ran away is a moving image piece shown on multiple screens, it emphasises how the land is heavily mined for the minerals that directly feed our technology induced lives. It chases the bridging of knowledge, for new practices that reshape our use and experience of the globally shared ecologies. ‘It was like experiencing a fold in time, she said’ attends particular experiences with different outback mining communities, altered landscapes, Aboriginal women’s knowledge of land, all whilst conjuring an artificial landscape placed at the junction of these different realities.
