Public Dreaming (2017)

Dreaming and sleeping occupy roughly one-third of our lives. Dreams are extremely vivid, intensely emotional and relate closely to the events and experiences of interpersonal and collective life. Today, however, dreams and the ritual contexts for dream sharing and collective meaning-making have eroded. The Public Dream Clinic was first conceived as an attempt to recreate a ritual context for dream sharing, to explore social dreaming. The clinic is a temporary “asylum” from rational, utilitarian and capitalist modes or patterns of thought. This project asks us to imagine another way of thinking and being or becoming in the world. The Clinic will be open for two nights during the opening weekend of Momentum 9. An archive of public dreaming will be on view throughout the biennial. This archive serves as an extension of the dream sharing, restoring to the dream its cultural relevance and counteract in small ways, the pervasive experiences of social alienation.
