Let’s Play: Life (2015–2017)
Based on the Let’s Play commentary format, this audio piece depicts a computer playing through the Game of Life, which is a cellular automaton that simulates systems in the real world. It has, among other things, been proposed as a model for the self-replication of robots. Emanating from underground, the commentary leaks into the room through a crack in the floor, along with evaporation from a primordial soup. Jenna Sutela’s installations, text and sound performances seek to identify and react to precarious social and material moments, often in relation to technology. Most recently, she has been exploring exceedingly complex biological and computational systems, ultimately unknowable and always becoming something new. Voice: Steven Phillips-Horst
