New online works include podcast series by Third Ear and a graphic novel by Ylva Westerlund. A new commissioned novel by Johannes Heldén will be published in conjunction with the Biennial’s Opening on June 17th. The novel will be available for purchase from the Biennial store and online.
Alien Encounters and Engagements
The ninth edition of the Momentum Biennial takes the notion of alienation as its starting point. By alienation the curators refer to a contemporary world where alien processes and entities are becoming an integrated part of our lives through technological, ecological and social transformations. We encounter and engage with the alien every day. Alienation is our contemporary condition. While more information and modes of communication are available to us than ever before, it is not easier to make a sense of the whole. M9 addresses this confusion and insists on searching for new tools for greater understanding of human condition through cross-pollination of methods, categories and disciplines.
Transdisciplinary Explorations
The creative practices featured in M9 reflect an expanded transdisciplinary exploration. The practices will address alienation focusing on the following three areas: 1) Bodies, Objects and Technologies, 2) Ecology, and 3) Structures and Societies.
The three areas are conceived as overlapping and interconnected and manifest through the individual works and through the multiple connections these works create. The biennial addresses topical concerns of cultural and geographical borders, biopolitics and social inequality. The works featured in the biennial resonate with both local context of Moss and furthermore branch out to instigate and participate in broader discussions.
Towards Extraordinary Futures
With alienation as its theme M9 will present diverse and conflicted ways of experiencing, explaining and imagining the world anew. Alienation represents a potential to expand the horizons of our current lives, to think and act progressively and usher in change. Thus M9 wants to welcome the alien, also the alien in us, without preconceptions of familiar and foreign. It wants to welcome the alien as a challenge to the present as well as a promise of better, extraordinary futures.

John Duncan (US)
The Nazca Transmissions (2009)
Since the early 1970s, John Duncan has created a unique body of work combining experimental music, theatre performance, and conceptual art, challenging expectations and expanding perceptions. The Nazca Transmission are based on recordings by the German archaeologist Anton Düder at the famous Nazca Lines, a series of large geoglyphs in the Nazca Desert in Peru, which by some are believed to be the work of an alien civilization capable of intergalactic travel. Accompanied by meticulous scientific data for each track Düder sent the recordings to Duncan. Düder was fascinated with Duncan’s prior use of infrasonic field recordings from the Australian coastline and believed he could do similar artistic justice to his Nazca recordings. The resulting musical composition by Duncan, consisting of eye-quivering sub-bass pulses, shrill, filigree hi-end tones, shortwave blasts and tectonic creaks, unfolds a soundscape by inhabited those dimensions of planetary life that will most likely forever remain a mesmerizing mystery, alien.

John Duncan (US) — The Nazca Transmissions (2009)

Since the early 1970s, John Duncan has created a unique body of work combining experimental music, theatre performance, and conceptual art, challenging expectations and expanding perceptions. The Nazca Transmission are based on recordings by the German archaeologist Anton Düder at the famous Nazca Lines, a series of large geoglyphs in the Nazca Desert in Peru, which by some are believed to be the work of an alien civilization capable of intergalactic travel. Accompanied by meticulous scientific data for each track Düder sent the recordings to Duncan. Art Education
At the Momentum Biennial, we reach out to a young public. In cooperation with the Cultural School Satchel program in Østfold, we welcome pupils from Junior High and High Schools. In our education program for the biennial we focus particularly on topical issues for society and on critical thinking.
We want to engage with a young public and engage them in reaching out to their peers. We want young people to take part in creating an open and inclusive meeting place through art.
History
Since its inception in 1998, MOMENTUM has strived to present compelling works of art and outstanding artistic ventures in a Norwegian and Nordic context. The biennial has since become established as one of the most exciting platforms for contemporary art in the Nordic region. MOMENTUM`s main arenas are Momentum Kunsthall and Galleri F 15. Furthermore the biennial features contemporary art in off-sites and public space.
